The Gold Libertad coins were first issued by the Mexican Mint in 1981 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coins, but only for that one year. The program returned in 1991 with those same three weights and two new fractional-weights: 1/20 oz and 1/10 oz coins. Like other gold bullion coin programs, the 1/20 oz Gold Libertad is often the most popular choice. It regularly competes with the 1 oz Gold Libertad for the highest mintage figure each year. The highest mintage on record is 65,225 coins from 1992, while the lowest is 650 coins from 2013.

On the obverse of 2020 1/20 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins is a depiction of Winged Victory. This vision of Winged Victory was modernized in the early 2000s for the Libertad Series of bullion coins. It depicts Victory as you see her atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Her 22-foot tall statue was erected on top of the column when it was completed in 1921 to mark the 100th anniversary of Mexican independence.

The reverse of 2020 Mexican Gold Libertad Coins features the Mexican coat of arms. This modern version of the national seal depicts a Mexican golden eagle battling with a serpent as it sits perched on the arm of a cactus. “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” is inscribed above with a wreath framing the design from below.

The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 and is the oldest mint in the Western Hemisphere. Today, it is controlled by the federal government and Banco de Mexico.
