British Gold Britannia bullion coins are preparing to enter a new era in 2023. With the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, this series will eventually feature its first release without Her Majesty’s effigy on the obverse. However, before that happens the Royal Mint will issue early 2023 Britannias with Her Majesty’s effigy for one final time. Right now, 2023 1/4 oz British Gold Britannia Coins are available to purchase online.

British Gold Britannia Coins now feature security elements on the reverse that were introduced in the 2020s. These elements include a motion-texture background, latent security mark, micro-text engraving, and tincture lines on Britannia’s shield on the reverse of the coins.

Obverse design elements on 2023 British Gold Britannia Coins include an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in right-profile relief in a 2015 portrait from Jody Clark. The fifth-generation effigy of the Queen, the design shows her aged 89 years with the George IV State Diadem.

Reverse visuals on 2023 1/4 oz Gold Britannia Coins feature Britannia. This stirring rendition of Britannia was created for the series in 1987 by Philip Nathan and is used on all versions of the coin in production today.

These are the final British Gold Britannias with an effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Later, the Royal Mint will debut 2023 Gold Britannias with a portrait of King Charles III.
